Between 17-20 July 2018, the University of Malta hosted an international doctoral summer school in the field of TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). 23 students from across the globe took part including 6 PhD students from Graz. In order to take part, students had to apply with a letter of motivation and CV and only the top students were selected. The event was organised by Prof Sarah Mercer (Anglistik, University of Graz) and Dr Daniel Xerri (University of Malta). The intensive four-day programme included presentations, input sessions, discussion groups, reflection tasks, one-to-one consultations, and a closing poster conference. Expertise was also on hand from two specially invited leading scholars from the field: Prof Gary Barkhuizen (University of Auckland) and Prof Jean-Marc Dewaele (Birkbeck Colleage, University of London). It was a highly rewarding event for all concerned and the location in the old town campus of the University of Malta in Valetta made for an incredibly special backdrop to the working sessions. Overall, it was a great success and we look forward to the next international doctoral summer school.
